‘Comfortable heels’ sounds like a textbook example of a contradiction. It’s like finding a blue unicorn.

You are not the only one who goes through the torture of wearing sky-high heels to impress your date.

The only good thing of wearing painful heels is, that you can hold your date tight by the end of the night.

But that doesn’t change the fact that you still want to feel comfortable while wearing heels.

I have had my share of trying countless pair of shoes.

In the hope of finding the most comfortable heels.

By doing so I have found some handy tricks that help to make heels less sucky.

So, when you are looking for the most comfortable heels pay attention to these factors:

1. FIND THE RIGHT HEEL HEIGHT YOU CAN HANDLE

I found out that heels that are higher than 10cm (4’’) made me clinch to my boyfriend for dear life because I could just not walk in these heels. The arch of these type of heels is just too high for me. And girl, when I tell you the pain that comes with it... Excruciating! It all has to do with my flat feet. This might sound crazy, but I can handle heels that are lower than 9cm (3.5’’).

If you want to know what heel height you can handle best read my article on: Finding The Most Comfortable Heel Height For You using a Scientific Heels Formula

Heels that are than 8cm (3’’) are the best for me because I can walk on them for hours. And after checking in with my friends I noticed that a lot of women feel comfortable within this height too.

So, the next time when you are purchasing a new pair of heels for yourself, don’t just get fazed at the beauty of the heels. Pay attention at the height of the heel.

2. MAKE SURE THE HEELS YOU ARE WEARING ARE NOT TOO NARROW

One thing I’ve noticed as a wide fit girl is that a lot of heels that are made for women are very narrow.

How can you detect if your shoes are too narrow? Well if your (pinky) toe(s) is barking at you while wearing heels, know that your shoe is too narrow.

If you continue to wear these types of heels you will end up like me in the past and can experience painful symptoms as bunions, corns, hammertoes and crossover toes.

So, you might want to look into wide fit heels. Don’t be sad though you do not have to go through your grandma shoe closet.

3. MAKE SURE YOUR HEELS ARE NOT TOO WIDE FOR YOU

When you wear heels that are too wide you tend to clench your toes for more grip.

It’s very stressful for the toes because they constantly have to keep your feet in place.

So, after doing some research I found some tricks that really help.

  • Hairspray: Spray some hairspray on the inside of your heels and voila, no more sliding.

  • Double-sided tape: will keep your feet in place. Celebrities like Beyonce and Jessica Alba use this trick. Just stick the tape on your insole and the side of your heels and you are good to go.

  • Beeswax: is a great anti-slipping tool. Just rub it on the inside of your heels.

4. KNOW YOUR RIGHT SHOE SIZE

I can’t press this enough.. Find the right shoe size to fit your feet.

It might sound really silly and something very natural to know, but in a recent study by The College of Podiatry in 2017 found that nearly half of the women in UK alone wear the wrong shoe size.

5. STURDY BLOCK HEELS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND

Chunky heels do not tend to wiggle as quick as stilettos.

These type of heels will prevent your ankle from snapping like my neck does when my boyfriend gets cheeky with me.

I am not saying that pencil stilettos are the devil. I’m just saying high stilettos are not made for standing all day.

6. GO FOR THE ALREADY PADDED INSOLED HEELS

So what if you have found the perfect heels that fit wonderful but with every step you take the ball of your heel hurts?

That is something very common with single sole heels because there is a lot of pressure on that part of your feet. Try to find a heel that has an already thick insole like the image above.

The padding will absorb the shock you usually feel.

BONUS TIP: GO FOR PLATFORM HEELS

Heels that have a platform are more comfortable than single soled heels because the actual heel is shorter than the total heel height. Also, the platform makes the impact of your feet touching the ground, less great so that means less discomfort.

However thick platform heels can sometimes make your feet wiggle and sometimes snaps your ankle. Especially if the platform is very thick and the heel is a stiletto. The shoe should be a good ratio between a thick platform and a fitting heel.

So you might wonder after reading all these steps, why you would still wear heels? Well, you know what they say: Who wants to be beautiful must suffer, but is that really true? I personally do not go by this saying and I am pretty sure you do not want to endure this annoying discomfort on a night out.

So when you are looking for heels please do not get blinded by the glamour of the shoes. Use these steps to find your perfect heels and if you want to be extra sure read my article on what heels you need to avoid.
